Employers covered by federal law are prohibited from discriminating against job applicants and employees on the following bases:

Protected Categories

  • Race, Color, Religion, Sex, National Origin — Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
  • Disability — Sections 501 and 505 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 / Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
  • Age — Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967
  • Sex (Wages) — The Equal Pay Act of 1963
  • Genetics — Title II of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008
  • Retaliation — All of the above laws prohibit retaliation against individuals who complain about job discrimination or assist in an investigation or lawsuit
